Why Is PRP Used During Graft Implantation in a Hair Transplant?
During a hair transplant, the period immediately before and after a graft is implanted is important. Once a follicular unit has been removed from the donor area, it temporarily loses its normal blood supply. After implantation, the graft must settle into the recipient tissue and establish a new vascular connection. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used during this stage as an additional treatment intended to support the environment around the newly implanted follicles.
PRP is prepared from the patient's own blood. After centrifugation, a plasma fraction containing a higher concentration of platelets is obtained. Platelets contain biologically active proteins and growth factors involved in tissue repair and signaling.
Does PRP Improve Blood Supply Around the Grafts?
PRP contains signaling molecules associated with angiogenesis, the biological process through which new blood vessels develop, and tissue repair. This provides a plausible mechanism for its use around freshly implanted follicles.
Newly transplanted follicles still go through a biological healing and revascularization process. PRP is being used with the intention of supporting that process; it does not replace it.
Can PRP Help the Recipient Area Heal?
PRP is also used for its potential role in tissue repair. However, healing after a hair transplant is affected by multiple variables, including recipient-site trauma, graft density, scalp characteristics, postoperative care, smoking status, and individual biology.
What Matters More Than PRP During a Hair Transplant?
PRP may influence the biological environment around a graft, but the foundations of hair transplantation remain surgical planning and execution. A natural result requires an appropriate hairline, safe donor management, careful follicular-unit extraction, appropriate graft preservation, correct graft distribution, natural direction and angulation, and a plan that anticipates future hair loss.
For example:
- PRP cannot correct an unnaturally low hairline.
- It cannot restore follicles removed from an overharvested donor area.
- It cannot make incorrectly angled grafts look natural.
- It cannot stop the future progression of androgenetic alopecia by itself.
