Can Thyroid Problems Cause Hair Loss?

Both an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and an overactive (hyperthyroidism) can disrupt the hair cycle and cause diffuse shedding.

Thyroid hormones influence nearly every tissue, including the follicle. Each follicle cycles through growth, transition, rest and shedding, and significant thyroid imbalance can push more follicles than usual into the resting phase.

The delay is what confuses people. Shedding often starts weeks or months after the hormone imbalance begins, so a patient may notice hair on the pillow long after the blood test would have shown a problem. It also means shedding can continue for a while after treatment starts.

This is a disruption of the cycle, which is why recovery is possible.

What Does Thyroid Hair Loss Look Like?

Typically it is diffuse: thinner everywhere rather than receding at the temples or crown. People describe more hair in the shower drain and on the brush, and a ponytail that feels thinner than it did a year ago. The medical term is telogen effluvium.

Other features depend on the direction of the imbalance. In hypothyroidism, hair may become dry, coarse and brittle, and the outer third of the eyebrows may thin. Fatigue, cold intolerance, dry skin and constipation often accompany it.³ In hyperthyroidism, hair tends to turn fine and soft, alongside palpitations, heat intolerance, tremor, sweating or unexplained weight loss.

Hair texture alone cannot diagnose either condition. Plenty of people have dry, shedding hair and a perfectly normal thyroid.

What is TSH?

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) comes from the pituitary gland, not the thyroid. It is the signal telling the thyroid how much hormone to make. When the thyroid underperforms, the pituitary shouts louder and TSH rises. When there is too much thyroid hormone, TSH falls.

Can You Lose Hair With a Normal TSH?

Very commonly. Pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, inflammatory scalp disease, iron deficiency and medication-related shedding all occur with normal thyroid function. A man with receding temples and crown thinning probably has androgenetic alopecia, whatever his TSH. A woman who sheds heavily three months after crash dieting may have telogen effluvium from the diet.

The two can overlap, too. Someone with hypothyroid shedding on top of underlying pattern loss may see the temporary shedding settle while the genetic thinning remains.

Who Should Get a Thyroid Test?

Testing makes the most sense when shedding is diffuse or unexplained and comes with symptoms such as fatigue, temperature intolerance, weight change, palpitations, menstrual changes, dry skin, thinning eyebrows, or a personal or family history of thyroid disease.

Considering a Hair Transplant with Thyroid Disease in İzmir?

At our clinic in İzmir, Türkiye, thyroid history is part of the medical assessment. Our surgeons look at whether your thyroid is well managed, whether active diffuse shedding is present, and whether the remaining pattern and donor area support surgery.

Patients from Türkiye, Europe and the United States can send recent thyroid results, a full medication and supplement list, and clear photographs of the hairline, top, crown, sides and donor area for a preliminary review before traveling via WhatsApp. Photographs show the pattern of thinning but cannot establish thyroid function or the cause of shedding, so final candidacy requires an individual clinical evaluation.
