Can Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Effectively Promote Hair Regrowth?

What Is Low-Level Laser Therapy?

Low-level laser therapy, also referred to as low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation, involves exposure of the scalp to non-thermal red or near-infrared light (typically 600–1100 nm) at low energy levels. Mechanisms

The exact mechanisms by which LLLT influences hair growth are not fully defined, but proposed biological effects include:

  • Activation of epidermal stem cells in the follicle anagen initiation phase.
  • Modulation of cellular signaling pathways via increased nitric oxide production and reactive oxygen species regulation.

These effects may enhance mitochondrial function and promote follicular cell proliferation, supporting transition into active growth phases.

Safety and Tolerability

Across clinical studies, LLLT has demonstrated an excellent safety profile, with minimal adverse events reported. Common complaints are typically mild, such as scalp irritation. This favorable tolerability makes LLLT an appealing option for patients who cannot tolerate or prefer not to use pharmacologic therapy.
